Internal Living Pods

Info

U-Build can be used to create a room within a room, opening up endless possibilities for inhabiting and re-configuring large spaces. U-Build has been used to create internal pods within a number of old industrial buildings, including former warehouses in London, Manchester, Leeds, and a former cotton mill in the Swiss Alps. If you need to create your own warm, private space within a cold empty shell, then U-Build could be the solution for you. Unlike building with conventional approaches, such as brick, timber frame and plasterboard, the whole U-Build system is demountable, meaning that you can take it with you if your lease or residency comes to an end. Here are a few possible use cases:

  • Accommodation: Guardian living, sleeping facilities, homeless shelters
  • Facilities:  Toilets, security booths, welfare
  • Hospitality: Shower cubicles, changing rooms, cinema rooms
  • Flexible working: Meeting pods, studio spaces, phone cabins

In 2017 U-Build and Studio Bark teamed up with Lowe Guardians,  Anna Glover and Cut and Construct to create the SHED Project, a revolutionary and environmentally friendly solution for quality and affordable accommodation in vacant buildings. Each SHED takes one day to construct, and the intention is for each guardian to build it themselves, taking ownership of their living quarters and creating the potential to develop a new community of SHED builders.

Client perspective

“For me it transforms living in London from pigeon-hole lodging, to making a space truly your own. Now, I couldn’t live any other way. This city is so transient & fast-paced, we’re burnt out all the time! We rarely give ourselves time to pause, or somewhere to rest that is true to you and restores your spirit. I think the Shed Project actually allows that.”
