‘Climate Emergency!’ at Arts Depot

An exhibition co-created by 3 Barnet schools presenting an emotive and artistic response to the climate crisis we face as a society. The schools explored their personal responses the climate issues we face through a series of structured workshops, culminating in an exhibition in North London Artsdepot’s Apthorp Gallery. Many of the children will live to see the most catastrophic effects of climate change in their lifetime, so it is of high relevance to them.

The workshops involved the construction of a 3D structure that would convey their own messages around the theme of Climate Emergency. Facilitated workshops that guided the students through four stages, ‘Brief’, ‘Design’, ‘Build’ and ‘Evaluate’, with a final celebration day at the Apthorp Gallery. Each school’s design built on the design of the previous school, so that the final piece would be the result of their collective efforts.

The world’s leading climate scientists have warned there is only a eleven years for global warming to be kept to a maximum of 1.5C, beyond which even half a degree will significantly worsen the risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people.
Beyond this target, unchecked emissions will lead to ‘tipping points’, where climate change could accelerates beyond humanity’s ability to control it, leading to mass extinctions and societal collapse.
